I feel a need to have some writing on this blog about KINGDOM. Let’s fulfill that.
While nothing that he does ever fits neatly into a category, I’m gonna put him in the GARAGE/GRIME section, as the least objectionable fit. What an eclectic category it is, thus far.
Kingdom, a Brooklyn born, LA based DJ/Producer, has become an underground revolutionary of BASS MUSIC, resulting from early experimentations with fusing GRIME, CRUNK RAP, BMORE, & HOUSE, and doing it in a deep and refined way. His signature chopping and screwing of RNB vocals has become imitated to the point that it is now fairly common place. He is leading a generation of producers who make ethereal and introspective Bass Music, along with his FADE TO MIND CREW (whom I mentioned in my review of the TOTAL FREEDOM OPENING CEREMONY MIXTAPE). One to watch? You bet.
Kingdom’s edit of JACQUES GREENE’s TELL ME is certainly not an upfront effort from the artist, but it’s a favourite of mine. He kept the original integrity of the track, but managed to also add some very smart club friendly sensibilities to it. I’m particularily fond of the SPASTIK-esque drum loops which cascade throughout the track. Hopefully, you’ve heard this one in my NOW YOU DEAD studio mix. Like it? Grab the full tune below.
