I normally don’t write features about artists that are already part of the Dead Kids camp, here on DKGL, but Toronto’s HUGSNOTDRUGS have self-released a new album, today, that is so impressive, I had to drop everything and help spread the word.
HUGSN؆DRUGS – BETTER DAYS
“Hugsnotdrugs leaves the samplers behind for the first time and provide all their own vocals for this collection of fluid beats breaks drips and drops, edm from every angle and from every generation all on one album intended to bottle the essence of the free spirited raver everywhere.”
You’re gonna be shocked when you hear this album. There is a wide variety of tunes, but they all play together comfortably, sharing a dark prettyness, even when things get quite dancey, or grimey. Rave music has grown up, and this album, made by 2 very experienced ravers, is a testament to that. It’s experiemntal, and adventurous, but also very musical. I wouldn’t want you to miss out on any of the surprises found within, so make sure you play through the whole thing.
I was invited to pick a tune, from the album, to give away, and it was a tough decision, but I’m gonna go with M.W.A.G. The vocoder vocals may be incoherent, but they still manage to be infectious. This tune contains the best of the surprises I mentioned above. By half way through, you’ll be convinced that you’re listening to a chilled FUTURE POP jam, but then the track morphs into something completely different. Something high in heat and energy. I won’t ruin it for you. Traditionally, EDM tracks end in the same place they began, regardles of what happens between start and finish. I think it’s a really good look, in 2013, to finish a song in a completely different place from where it started. It’s all about taking the listener on a real journey, and this song achieves that. Freshhhhhhh!
