The single most important person in the history of popular music is DAVID BOWIE. “…he has permeated and altered more lives than any comparable figure.” – David Buckley
DAVID BOWIE – LET’S DANCE
It’s the title of both his biggest hit single, and best selling album, so it might surprise you to know that LET’S DANCE was never meant to be such a mainstream success. At the time of its recording, Bowie was being heavily influenced by, of all things, TEXAS BLUES, and wanted to fuse those sounds with funky dance beats, as a new musical exploration. Unintended by Bowie, the resulting album struck a big chord with the young, NEW WAVE audience, which, in the coming years, would put big pressure on Bowie to continue delivering to this new found fan base which he, admittedly, didn’t understand.
Living up to his legacy as an eloquent intellectual, Bowie, himself, has described the whole situation far better than I ever could. “There wasn’t anything else that really quite sounded like that at the time. So it only seems commercial in hindsight because it sold so many [copies]. It was great in its way, but it put me in a real corner in that it fucked with my integrity.”
Still, the experimental combination of FUNK and BLUES-ROCK, heard on Let’s Dance, culminated into in a piece of musical history that still resonates with people today, and I imagine always will. It’s a truly timeless song, and it should be in everyone’s music collection, regardless of what you happen to be in to, which is why you really ought to download it below.
