Sorry to interrupt, but if we’re gonna talk about the early 80s, there’s one band…infact, one song, that MUST be addressed within the discussion. Let’s get started.
BOW WOW WOW – I WANT CANDY
Originally recorded by THE STRANGELOVES, in 1965, it’s a 1982 cover version, by UK NEW WAVE band, BOW WOW WOW that remains a defining piece of music history. As far as the charts are concerned, the band is remembered as a one hit wonder, but culturally, Bow Wow Wow have been solidified as a recognized symbol of the 80s. It was their look, representing the NEW ROMANTIC style, which was the most provocative fashion movement of the decade. It was their youthful, carefree experimentation, that was such an important aspect of the New Wave sound. It was their PUNK ROCK attitude towards authoritarianism, and flare for controversy, centered mainly around the sexuality of the band’s extremely young lead singer, ANNABELLA LWIN, and her affection for partial, to full nudity. See the above album cover? You’re looking at a 15 year old. Yikes! As a single, I WANT CANDY was the best, if not perfect, representation of all the above aspects of the group, and it was popularized, as a MUSIC VIDEO, through heavy play on MTV, which had just launched and was struggling for content.
Despite the lack of chart success, with this one song, Bow Wow Wow managed to become a defining image of a very exciting time in Western civilization. Press play below, and do some reminiscing, OR wish you were there. And if you find yourself emotionally moved, forget about the mp3, and grab yourself a copy of the VINYL.
