I know a lot of old DJs, and listening to them bitch about how real DJing is done on vinyl turntables just hurts my brain. The reality is that they’re just angry because technology moved forward (as it always does and always will) and left them behind. The problem with vinyl turntables is that there are so many things that can go wrong, and they always do. I cut vinyl out of my live act back in 2007, and I can tell you the exact moment that I made the decision to do so. I was playing a gig at a club, in Pittsburgh, PA. The place was rammed, the party was popping off, and everyone was bouncing. It turned out that the floor of the club was not properly reinforced. The room was shaking so much that we could literally see the DJ booth wobbling back and forth. Some people tried to push the crowd back, creating a distance between them and the booth, but it didn’t work. Any attempt to drop a record, and the needle would just bounce and skip right across the platter. Good thing I also had CDs with me. The CDJs, which were sitting on the same surface as the vinyl turntables, and were wobbling back and forth just as violently, didn’t skip a single beat. I was so impressed with their durability. That was the end of vinyl DJing, for me. Now days, if it’s a casual club gig, I often prefer to just play off my laptop, because you never know what kind of equipment the club is gonna stick you with. At least, if I’m on my lappy, I’ve got most of what I need right with me. Sorry, old timers. Here’s some new music that you will, undoubtedly, hate.
